Woo!Tunes: Her Vagina Isn’t Handicapped

hc

One woman utilizes lyricism to explain you that her vagina is not stifled

“Sex, beauty, and the thrill of climax–like certain pages of this magazine arguably suggest, remember–are about the standardization of unachievable ideals. Sex, as far as the public is concerned, isn’t for everyone–it’s for the select few who deserve it. And yet, some of he people featured herein are probably too bloody concerned with themselves to unhinge enough to orgasm. Rather silly.”

This is the most profound revelation within the Flaunt article, because it captures the true social implications of sex and who should be satisfied with and enjoy this act. In the article, Martinez defends her reasoning for creating music to express herself on the topic of sex. She does this mainly by highlighting the power that music has to convey messages clearly and plainly.

“You don’t have to jump around to do music. You can develop the lyrics, and feel the lyrics.

And she does just that. Check out her video on youtube below:

Women Woes and Woos: If you’re not so good without a plan B, they got you!

vending-machine-plan-b

Back in my day, this is to say that I really have a day, to my minimal knowledge vending machines were primarily for snacks. Well, at Pennsylvania College, and many more college campuses, vending machines are actually changing lives in ways much deeper than satisfying grumbling stomachs.

According to the FDA, vending machines aren’t limited to cheetos and candy–but they are perfect for administering plan b pills to college-aged women. Plan B, or emergency contraception(EC) for preventing pregnancy after participating in unprotected sex, is available via vending machine, and has been for three years at a campus located in Pennsylvania.

The machines are strategically placed in the health center, and only available after checking in and showing identification. Let’s face it, Drake may be fine and dandy without a plan b, but this is certainly not the reality for everyone. Ms Magazine sums it up in this way:

“The university began making Plan B available after a survey concluded that 85 percent of students supported easy and affordable access to emergency contraception. Each dose of the drug costs $25, and that’s the same amount the university pays from the distributor–which means that no state-supported or taxpayer dollars are used for the program.”

This seems to be a fairly rational hybrid of accessibility and preventive measure for unwanted pregnancies.

What do you guys think about this? Would you like some hot fries with your contraceptives? How about a Snickers?

I kid, I kid.

Book Woo-views: You can’t possibly be a black woman, you listen to metal!

DawesMetal

NPR Interviews Black Female Metal Music Writer on her latest work

Obviously, there is much to be said and scrutinized about black women who listen to metal music. In her book What are you doing here, music writer Laina Dawes discusses her struggles, complexities, and difficulties with growing up in Ontario and dealing with people’s disdain for her involvement in the metal music scene. She even lost a possible friend in the midst of it all, and felt compelled enough to share her story. Scrutinized by the parents of black classmates, and at the same time by her white (potential) friends, Dawes finds herself trapped in a massive catch-22.

I am not a huge metal fan myself, although I do love Envy on the Coast, I recall attending Warped Tour some time in my teens, and although I was met with open arms, I was equally met with looks of confusion. I can not say that I was surprised, but it is liberating to see that someone is willing to share their narrative.

Check out the NPR interview.

What do you think? Can we limit music intake and style to a person’s skin color?

Woo-Spiration: Awkward Black Girl’s humorous depiction of the Job Hunt

looking for a job

issa

If you are anything at all like the average American, then surely you have experienced the tedious aspects of the job hunt. During this particular episode of The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, Issa Rae takes the viewer on quite the whirlwind that is becoming gainfully employed.

She’s notorious for her sick flows, afro buzz cut, and undeniably relatable web series. Issa Rae of Awkward Black girl has gained tremendous momentum via the net as a phenomenal writer and actress. She keeps it real on so many levels that it’s hard not to love her work. There is even news of a new comedy series on ABC!

The Stanford graduate has chosen to pursue a career of uncertainty and high risk, and quite frankly, I commend her for the work that she does. Rae does an excellent job of making real-life connections with the viewer, and never fails to induce ear-splitting laughter, at least from my end. For anyone who has ever endured the woes of seeking employment, this particular episode is sure to hit home. You might not know whether to laugh or cry.

When it comes down to it, a girl’s gotta eat—which means this same girl needs a car, home, and maybe even some luxurious unnecessary things at times. Sometimes you can’t even “pay” it forward without some dough. All in all, it’s just hard to be a contributing member to society without some mula, baby.

However, you can’t get any of that stuff without a job. Rae incorporates a hilarious hypothetical representation of just how cutthroat the job hunt can be.

Women Woes and Woos: Who runs the world? Naked Girls!

beyonce-gq-cover

Let’s talk words for a second. Think of the word grace, and what do you think? Elegant? Tasteful?

Beyonce’s GQ cover has been discussed over and over again, with plenty of parties exclaiming in joy, and others perhaps looking at it in dismay suggesting that she has “stooped so low” in her clothing choices. But–As far as the cover is concerned, there is something to consider.

FACT–She is a business woman; this is a men’s magazine. This magazine is marketed towards men. They are in business to sell this magazine to men. I hate to generalize but I think its safe to say this. Typically, men like sports, boobs, and butt; she delivers them all in a baseball styled t-shirt coupled with barely there boy short panties. Makes sense, no?

Some have suggested that this is a poor representation for baby Blue Ivy.

This is a fair argument–i guess.

Think about it though…Beyonce has maintained career that is far from foreign to all things scantily clad. I can’t say that I looked at this picture and thought…but what about Blue Ivy?!? What’s she gonna think? However, my conclusion might be moot..I’m no mother.

Do you become a new person when you have a child? Maybe.

Necole Bitchie shares two nice write-ups from The Guardian and Clutch magazine with views on how this image fits into the world of feminism.

The only bone I’m picking here is the bone with words. On numerous websites, the general consensus is that Beyonce graces February cover of GQ Magazine Is this the image of grace in 2013? I liken graceful to that of our current first lady, but I don’t know that I’d call this photo graceful. It’s a great photo, and I’m sure it is serving its purpose in the hands of men everywhere. But to say that it is graceful. Ehh…

I simply think racy would have been a better term to use. It is so very applicable. They kept it real on the MTV site.

But, I’m nobody.

What do you guys think? Is this photo graceful enough for you? Woo or Boo?

XO Jane is the official Women’s Complaint Department

Complaint_Department_Grenade

Artist Lykke Li has an awesome track proclaiming that if you want to complain, she is not your complaint department; however, this post is about an actual complaint department dedicated to women. Have you ever just wanted to scream out all of your issues, drama, things that most men typically don’t understand, and feel like there is actually someone in the world who gives a shred of a care about your feelings, and actually understands them?

Yeah, I didn’t think such a place existed either, until I became a regular reader of xoJane. It’s as if this place has no boundaries, and that is precisely why I love it so. xoJane was created with women in mind, most definitely.

Where else can you express your woes about chipped nail polish, not really understanding adulthood, or perhaps why you don’t have to explain anything–even your own rape?

The allure of this website lies in its tendency to be all inclusive, unafraid, and unapologetic, all at the same time. The subject matter is both extremely deep, and extremely lighthearted.

You should definitely check it out in your spare time; entertaining would be an understatement!

Women Woes: Boobs for School Busses raises 12 stacks

spain-moms2

Mothers in Spain are ensuring that their children are academically sound by baring it all.

A recent article at NPR highlights a group of women’s struggle to provide school transportation for their children after economic troubles snatched away funding for elementary school bus services. One woman describes the experience as embarrassing while she poses naked in the street for the calendar.

The reoccurring theme with women throughout history, is that many women have gone great lengths to ensure that their children are taken care of. This was an extremely efficient plan; it accomplished its goal at what I’m sure many would say a morally questionable cost.

Contrasting opinions rear their heads with one tax payer declaring: “Our women shouldn’t have to do this!” Yet another insists: “Where can I get one?…”

Just recently, I did a post about how every woman should know how to set a table. Should I have written one about how every woman should know how to wash her man’s jeans?  LOL…I think NOT!  Bad press is better than no press, right? Well, I’m not too sure about that. I was reading my morning edition on my iPad when this popped up. It was a picture taken by Emily Barnett, a staff writer for The Daily Telegraph, of the inside of her boyfriend’s jeans.  Like most laundry tags, this one gives launder instructions and then gives the option to just “give it to your woman”. On one hand, I was not familiar with Madhouse Jeans before this morning. On the other hand, I doubt very seriously that they will get my business. Not that I’m getting all self-righteous or anything, I just don’t think it’s cute. These are jeans for MEN, so…

Music: Cee-Lo’s Beautiful Guitarist Sharon Aguilar

One of my goals is to learn to play the guitar within the next two years; mainly so that I can have beautiful sessions like this. So, like I begin most of my dreams, I start with images. For this reason, I recently did a search on google for “female guitarists.” Low and behold, I was awestruck by Sharon Aguilar. She is arguably the most beautiful female guitarist I’ve ever seen!

Aguilar discusses her school experiences and first gig opportunities in this video:

Clearly, Cee-Lo isn’t the only one rocking out during this performance. The all girl band, Scarlet Fever, is definitely riding the hype train with him.

Who ever said female guitarists can’t be sexy is probably looking for a grave to crawl into, and rightly so.

What do you think would be the best part of being a female guitarist? For me, I think it’d be picking out the coolest looking outfits to perform in!
